Indian Head Massage - the benefits

What is Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head Massage is a treatment based on old Ayurvedic techniques involving work on the upper back, neck, shoulders, face and scalp.

It is a wonderfully relaxing holistic therapy, which treats the mind, body and spirit. Holistic therapies are the key to relaxation and inner calm. They will leave you relaxed, stress-free and relieved of any physical or emotional tension.

What will a Indian head massage treatment involve?

A variety of massage movements are used to relieve accumulated tension and stimulate circulation as well as to reduce stress and fatigue and improve mental clarity.

What are the benefits of an Indian head massage?

Stress reduction and anxiety

The massage is extremely effective for treating stress because it works on the areas of the body where we tend to carry stress - the upper back, neck, shoulders and head.

Indian head massage can also help to improve your overall sense of wellbeing, which in turn may also help to lower raised blood pressure and relieve anxiety.

Better sleep

The relaxing affect of Indian head massage can have a positive effect on your sleep, by encouraging deeper, more restful sleep and helping to reduce insomnia.

Reduces back/neck pain

The massage and stretching techniques used during an Indian head massage help to reduce muscle stiffness. Relaxing the muscles in the neck, shoulders, head and back and alleviating tension in these areas, helps to reduce pain and improves joint mobility.

Reduces headaches/migraines

When there is built-up tension in the head, neck, shoulders and upper back, it can often lead to headaches and/ or migraines. Similarly, when you are stressed this can result in tension headaches.

Indian head massage targets these areas, helping to reduce any muscle tension that could be causing the headaches, whilst the relaxing side of the massage will help to alleviate a tension headache.

Promotes hair growth

The massage increases nourishment and oxygen to the scalp and hair follicle which in turns stimulates hair growth.

It detoxifies the body by stimulating lymphatic drainage Indian Head Massage stimulates and improves lymphatic drainage and blood flow to the neck thus helping to remove waste products from the body.

This month enjoy a free Indian Head massage when you book any holistic treatment. Call to book or book online.

The New Years Skin Resolutions you'll be able to keep

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, so just like your body, it needs looking after.

It faces challenges such as harsh abrasion, pollution, sunlight and detergents, so it would seem silly to do anything other than care for it with a consistent skincare routine.

We’ve been chatting in The Barn and have come up with a list of New Year’s skin resolutions which will be easy to keep, and will get you the healthy, glowing skin you’ve always wanted!

1. Keep things clean!

Makeup bags, brushes, cloths and sponges are a breeding ground for bacteria, and this bacteria then gets transferred to our skin, leading to breakouts and clogged pores.

Whenever you use your makeup brushes, they collect oil, dead skin cells, dust, and debris. Clean you makeup brushes at least once a month, replace sponges and cloths regularly and give that makeup bag a wipe out every now and again.

2. Make sure you’re using the right products and have the right skincare routine for your skin

You don't know what’s best for your skin until you become better acquainted with it.

There is a huge range of products available to you, and yes, it can be overwhelming, but that’s why having a prescribed regime is so helpful! Knowing what your skin needs and can benefit from is what will lead to healthy, glowing skin!

Discover how to achieve your best skin ever with a complimentary skin fitness plan, which includes expert analysis and Dermalogica Face Mapping prescription.

3. Start double cleansing

Everyone knows to cleanse their skin twice daily, but most people don’t realise that a single cleanse still leaves behind a layer of oil-based debris, such as sunscreen, long-lasting make-up, pollution and your skin’s own sebum (oil).

This is because your usual cleanser simply cannot fully penetrate the barrier this oil-based debris creates, resulting in dull, congested skin.

Double-cleansing is simply the act of removing your make-up and SPF, excess sebum and dead skin until all grime and build-up are removed - then you can get down to actually cleaning your skin.

Find out more about double cleansing.

4.Wear sunscreen

There’s no question on how important sunscreen is. Being in the sun without the right protection increases the risks of skin diseases and guarantees early skin ageing.

Even if the chances of burning on a cloudy day seem pretty slim to none, it’s still important to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen products regardless of the weather.

Choose a moisturiser that contains SPF as UV is present even on a cloudy day.

5. Start exfoliating

When old skin cells start to pile up on the surface of the skin, it can leave skin looking dull, rough, and dry. Furthermore, the build-up of dead skin cells can result in excess oil, clogged pores, blemishes and acne. A regular exfoliating routine will leave your skin looking fresh and healthy!

Book a free skin consultation to find out which exfoliator is best for your skin.

6. Drink more water!

In the summer, we really focus on keeping hydrated and drinking plenty of water, however in winter bad habits creep back in.

The truth is you need to maintain your water intake no matter the season. Water accounts for 70% of the body, so as well as hydration it’s also essential for keeping our skin’s elasticity and is the key to healthy, glowing skin!

Dehydration in the skin weakens its defence and creates skin sensitivity, irritation, and premature ageing.

We’ve been trying out some new flavours at The Barn; try infusing your water with winter flavours such as cranberry and orange - delicious! Eating fresh fruit is also an excellent source of water!

7. Change your bedding more regularly

Skin cells go into makeover mode while we sleep, shedding dead, dry cells onto the surface of your face. This, alongside oil from your scalp and hair, ends up on your pillow and then your face. Yep, sounds gross doesn’t it?

Change your bedding at least once a week for healthy, glowing skin!

8. Stick with it

You have to be patient. Dramatic improvements don’t happen overnight. With a tailored routine you will start to notice small changes quickly, but it’s your commitment to your skincare regime that will really pay off.

New Year, New Nutrition

After an indulgent Christmas and New Year, it’s become tradition to reflect and make plans to change habits or introduce a new routine.

Maybe you want a complete overhaul - to start the new year with clean, healthy living. Or perhaps you just want to lose a few festive pounds.

With all good intentions, sometimes we need a little extra support and motivation to help us stick to them.

The heat of the stones penetrates deep into the muscle tissue allowing the muscles to relax around 4-5 times quicker than in a standard massage.

Winter skin tips from Dermalogica - dryness

Cool winter temperatures and low humidity levels, combined with hot showers and soap-based products can pull moisture from the skin.

On the surface, skin looks dull, feels tight, dry and itchy. At a microscopic level a lack of moisture and oil weakens your skin’s natural protective barrier, leaving it susceptible to invading chemicals causing redness, irritation and sensitivity.

Layering on extra hydration during colder seasons will restore lost moisture and relieve dry, thirsty skin.

Start with Multi-Active Toner, a refreshing toner that rehydrates with Aloe Vera and Cucumber. Mist over skin after cleansing to reduce tightness and lock in moisture.

Follow with Skin Hydrating Booster, a super-fluid that hydrates tissues and plumps parched skin. Apply 6 to 10 drops directly to skin, or mix with your favorite Dermalogica Moisturiser.

For an added boost, apply Skin Hydrating Masque 2 to 3 times a week after cleansing to calm, infuse skin with protective antioxidant vitamins, and restore moisture for fewer fine lines.

Remember, think layers when it comes to keeping skin healthy all winter long.

All products available from The Barn.

Stay happy and healthy this winter

The change in season is well upon us and, like most people, here at The Barn we’ve been chatting about the darker days, the colder weather and that overwhelming urge to stay indoors.

So, between us, we’ve come up with a list of top tips to keep us happy and healthy through the winter months - and we thought we’d share it with you!

Eat healthy

’Tis the season for hearty, comfort foods, but that doesn’t mean you can’t eat healthy during the winter. At The Barn, we’ll still be tucking into plenty of fruit and vegetables, hearty stews and winter smoothies.

Check out this delicious lentil and chorizo soup recipe from our resident Nutritional Therapist Juliette.

Stay hydrated

In the summer, we really focus on keeping hydrated and drinking plenty of water, however in winter bad habits creep back in and Costa try to lure us in with those Pumpkin Spiced Lattes…

The truth is you need to maintain your water intake no matter the season. Water not only keeps us hydrated but also helps regulate body temperature (key to staying warm in winter) and is essential to the function of cells, tissues and organs. It’s also key to healthy, glowing skin!

We’ve been trying out some new flavours at The Barn; try infusing your water with winter flavours such as cranberry and orange - delicious! Eating fresh fruit is also an excellent source of water!

Stay active

We know it’s difficult to stay motivated to exercise during the winter, but there are simple ways to get an endorphin-boost without hitting the gym.

Being in the countryside, we’re firm believers in the simple power of fresh air. Briony’s been getting her hit by taking the lovely Max out for a walk; Leah’s been hiking up Crook Peak after work. Find what works for you because fresh air is definitely good for the soul!

Rest up and get some ‘me-time'

Regular sleep is vital to staying healthy; don’t let yourself get run down. Book in some me-time; whether that’s reading a book, relaxing with a cuppa or treating yourself to a massage with us. It’s important to rest, relax and unwind.

Protect your skin

Drier, colder air, harsh central heating, sudden temperature changes… these all suck moisture fro your skin, so you're more likely to experience dryness and flakiness. Now’s the time to amp up your skincare routine and swap your usual products for richer, more nourishing alternatives.

You could give your skin a little boost with Phyto Replenish Oil from Dermalogica (we have a cute Christmas stocking filler size in at the moment!) This feather-light treatment oil rapidly absorbs to reinforce the skin’s protective barrier.

We hope our tips help you stay happy and healthy for winter Barnies! If all else fails, come and visit us!

6 ways to autumn-proof your skin

The change in season doesn't just call for a different wardrobe and a cosier home. Everything from cooler weather to spending too much time in dry, stuffy indoor environments, can deprive your skin of moisture.

Skin gets worn out by seasonal changes and cries out for richer moisturisers and comforting ingredients. It craves products and treatments that will give it back its glow; this is the time for hydrating masks, peels and facials.

Change your routine

Humidity levels drop off in the autumn and winter months. The drier the air, the more moisture it sucks from your skin, so you're more likely to experience dryness and flakiness.

Ideally, you want to amp up your skincare routine as the season changes and swap your products for richer, more nourishing alternatives.

“Just as you change your clothes with changing temperatures you should do the same with your skincare regimen” says skin expert Kelly Hooper. “You need to switch up your lightweight summer moisturiser to a more heavy duty cream."

Harsh central heating

If you haven’t done so already, you'll no doubt be switching on your heating sometime soon, and unfortunately it’s not going to do your skin any favours. "Heated air inside causes low humidity, which leads to water evaporating from our skin” says Kelly. "This can cause cracking, flaking and irritation and leave skin with a lacklustre, parched appearance.”

Give your skin a little boost with Phyto Replenish Oil. This feather-light treatment oil rapidly absorbs to reinforce the skin’s protective barrier. Wear it alone or layered under foundation for all-season dewy skin.

A handy tip is placing a few bowls of water near your radiators, as well as drinking lots of water and slapping on your rich moisturiser along with a replenishing lip balm and hand cream. Keep that skin hydrated!

Sudden temperature changes

During winter, our skin has to confront wind, cold and temperature changes between heated homes and the freezing outdoors.

Going from the cold outdoors into centrally-heated buildings and vice-versa can take its toll on your complexion. "This process causes the capillaries in your face to contract and expand rapidly leading to broken veins and skin redness," says Kelly.

Wrap up warm in the cold and try not to overdo it on the central heating. A light layer of barrier cream, such as Dermalogica’s Barrier Repair, will help protect the skin.

Hot baths and showers

When temperatures plummet, a hot bath or shower is really enticing. Sorry to rain on your parade but try to resist the temptation for the sake of your complexion if you can. Hot baths and showers can dissolve the protective barrier in the skin which will eventually lead to dryness. Opt for warm instead.

Drink more water

In the summer, we really focus on keeping hydrated and drinking plenty of water. Your skin is your largest organ and therefore needs hydration; it’s key to healthy, glowing skin. Our advice - swap that pumpkin spiced latte for a bottle of water. You’ll feel super smug and your skin will thank you for it!

Wear SPF

Yes, even on cloudy days! You may tend to ease up on applying sunscreen now that cooler weather has arrived but you absolutely need sun protection during the cooler months. The sun’s harmful rays are just as strong and damaging - despite the temperature - and they can really age your skin. Opt for a moisturiser that contains a high SPF. We love Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Recovery which contains SPF 50 and is super hydrating and nourishing.

Chemical peel: separating the myths from the facts

Chemical peels have a bad reputation. I’m sure I’m not the only one who hears those two words and pictures Samantha’s red, peeling face from that episode of 'Sex and the City'.

Chemical peels are the skin care treatment that is shrouded in the most mystery. So, I’ve decided to quiz my fellow Barnies and separate the myths from the facts:

Myth: You have to hide your face after a chemical peel

Fact: Contrary to the aforementioned Samantha scene, a professional chemical peel will not leave you with damaged, inflamed or flaking skin. There is no need to go into hiding!

Dermalogica’s Bioactive Surface Peel has an advanced formula that not only provide controlled penetration throughout the epidermis, but also soothes and hydrates, leaving your skin smoother, brighter and firmer with zero downtime.

Myth: Chemical peels hurt

Fact: You may experience a little tingling, tightness, or a change in temperature, but it will not hurt. Your skin therapist will continuously ask questions to make sure no sensation is too extreme.

You may experience slight increased sensitivity afterwards, so to avoid any irritation or discomfort don’t exfoliate for a few days and drink plenty of water!

Myth: You can’t wear makeup for days afterwards

Fact: Whilst it is best to wait as long as possible on the day of the treatment to apply makeup, we understand that some clients want to apply it right away the good news is, you can! We do suggest waiting 20 minutes and using mineral-based makeup as it’s kinder to the skin. This gives your skin time to calm down and reduces the possibility of irritation.

Myth: A chemical peel won’t have any impact on my skin

Fact: Chemical peels with modern formulas – like the Dermalogica’s Bioactive Surface Peel – include a combination of multiple exfoliating acids (like glycolic, lactic and fruit acids) that will tighten the skin, unclog pores, improve lines, and leave skin super smooth.

They can also help with: congestion, breakouts, luminosity, premature ageing and hyperpigmentation.

Myth: Having a chemical peel is a one-time solution

Fact: Skin health is like going to the gym; it’s your commitment that will lead to visible results! Peels need to be done on a consistent basis for the best outcome. Take advantage of our monthly offer and save money on a course of three peels.

Myth: Chemical peels are only beneficial for those with problem skin

Fact: While there are chemical peels that specifically target acne, acne scarring or sun spots, the most popular use of chemical peels is for skin regeneration so they’re ideal for anyone who wants to improve the look of their skin.

Chemical peels can be beneficial for most skin types including sensitive skin.

Myth: Chemical peels are bad for you

Fact: The word chemical might not sound like something you should ever put on your skin, but when performed correctly, chemical peels are a safe way to improve your skin. Many chemical peels actually use naturally occurring acids found in fruits in the case of alpha hydroxy acid, and other foods like sugar cane in the case of glycolic peels.

Hopefully we’ve answered some of your questions Barnies, but, as always, if you have any more, give us a call or send us a message - we’re happy to help!

Why now is the perfect time for a chemical peel...

When the temperature drops and there’s less moisture in the air, your skin tends to be drier. As it turns out, that’s the best time for a chemical peel.

After the summer, your skin can be dry and damaged. Chemical peels are designed to safely remove dull outer layers of skin and help the skin underneath regenerate for a smooth, radiant complexion.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What is a Bioactive™ Surface Peel?

A Bioactive Surface Peel is a professional chemical peel by Dermalogica designed to resurface the skin with minimal recovery time. The unique, multi-phase approach works with the skin’s biology to safely slough away dull epidermal layers and accelerate cell renewal without inflammation and the prolonged downtime typically associated with chemical peels.

this one leah w.png

What does it do?

Our skin therapists can help design a series of treatments to address your specific needs, whether you're looking to address photoageing, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone or acne breakouts.

A BioActive Surface Peel can also be used to:

  • Decrease surface roughness
  • Stimulate cell turnover and collagen production
  • Brighten the skin
  • Minimise the apprearance of pigmentation.

How does is work?

Chemical peels work by removing the outer layers of the skin. The depth of the peeling is determined by the chemical agent used and the concentration, amongst other factors.

Following a chemical peel, the deeper layers of the skin will respond by regenerating new skin and by increasing the production of collagen. The result is a look that's smoother and more youthful.

Do I need a patch test?

Yes, a patch test and skin consultation must be carried out at 24 hours before treatment - there is no charge for this.

How long is the treatment?

Approximately 45 minutes.

How many do I need? Your skin therapist will assess your skin and advise you. We recommend

a course of maximum results.

Take advantage of our current offer:

Bioactive Surface Peel peel £60 (normally £75) + a free aftercare kit Course of 3 for £150 (normally £210)

Recipe for great skin

Even the most skin-savvy girl would agree that the sheer number of skincare products available can be overwhelming.

Then you start delving into their ingredients = mind blown. From antioxidants to retinol; peptides to AHAs; what do they do? Do they work? Are they right for your skin type?

We like to be helpful at The Barn so we’ve compiled a handy list of the most common skincare products ingredients.

Antioxidants protect your skin by defending it against pollution and environmental damage. You can’t see it happening but your skin takes a daily beating from pollution and environmental stressors, which can lead to sagging, wrinkles and dull skin tone.

Antioxidants in skincare products can do a lot for the health and appearance of your skin. They not only help combat the elements responsible for the visible signs of ageing, but can also calm skin, help reveal a more youthful appearance and revitalise dull-looking skin.

Just like your body needs a mix of healthy nutrients, so does your skin; it’s your largest organ after all.

Tip: Look for ingredients such as green tea, white tea, flaxseed oil - all super antioxidants!

Retinol is simply another name for vitamin A. It works to increase cell turnover, stimulate collagen and elastin production, fade hyperpigmentation, and help skin stay hydrated and glowing without irritation.

It helps even your skin tone, tighten your pores, plumps and smoothes the surface of the skin as well as fading fine lines.

Tip: Retinol is best best applied at nighttime because it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. This means it’s important to put an SPF on in the morning too!

Many AHAs are derived from organic sugars. They prevent the build up of dead skin cells, so they're great essentially as an exfoliant to smooth the skin’s surface. They also stop pores from being blocked and can help brighten your skin tone.

AHAs remove the need for harsh scrubs in those that prefer to avoid manual exfoliation. Particular ingredients to look for on product labelling are glycolic acid or salycic acid.

Tip: AHAs also increase photosensitivity so make sure you wear a sunscreen daily (see below).

new blog - recipe for good skin.png

Peptides are the building blocks of proteins. The most commonly known proteins in the skin are collagen, elastin and keratin, which are responsible for our skin’s texture and tone; making the skin plumper, smoother and firmer.

Different types of peptides have different effects, from smoothing wrinkles or repairing barrier function to increasing firmness and hydration.

Tip: Peptides tend to be found in leave-on products, usually in the anti-ageing range.

Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the human body and is also produced synthetically for use in skincare.

Hyaluronic acid is renowned for its ability to retain moisture, making it a common ingredient in hydrating serums and moisturisers. Since it can absorb up to a thousand times its own weight in water, it has the ability to instantly plump skin and smooth wrinkles, as well as helping skin repair itself more quickly.

It’s a great everyday product for achieving smooth, plumped, hydrated skin.

Tip: Hyaluronic acid is a great way to hydrate oily skin without clogging pores, whilst it is gentle enough for sensitive skin types.

There's no question on how important sunscreen is. Being in the sun without the right protection, or long exposure to the sun, increases the risks of skin diseases and guarantees early skin ageing.

Tip: Choose a moisturiser that contains SPF as UV is present even on a cloudy day.

While you may be getting enough vitamins from your fruit and vegetables, or from supplements, you may not know the benefits of having these nutrients in your skincare regime.

Certain nutrients are essential for preventing and reversing many signs of skin ageing. For example, Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant with UV protective properties. It also helps to protect and repair the skin, boost collagen and reduce pigmentation.

Vitamin A is also a great multi-tasker - it boosts collagen, reduces inflammation, reduces pigmentation and helps to control oil production (sebum) and spots. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. Vitamin B is great for healing… we could go on.

Tip: You really are what you eat. Think of your food as part of your skincare routine for more radiant, youthful skin.

So Barnies, hopefully our guide will help you next time you are choosing skincare products. If you need any further advice or tips, ask one of our incredible skin therapists.

What did your cleanser leave behind?

Everyone knows to cleanse their skin twice daily, but most people don’t realise that a single cleanse still leaves behind a layer of oil-based debris, such as sunscreen, long-lasting make-up, pollution and your skin’s own sebum (oil).

This is because your usual cleanser simply cannot fully penetrate the barrier this oil-based debris creates, resulting in dull, congested skin.

So, what is double cleansing?

Double-cleansing is simply the act of removing your make-up and SPF, excess sebum and dead skin until all grime and build-up are removed - then you can get down to actually cleaning your skin.

The first cleanse should remove make up, bacteria and dirt from the skin. The second cleanse should target your skin care needs to deeply cleanse and care for the skin, as well as prepping the skin for your serums and moisturiser to maximise their absorption.

The Barn recommends...

We recommend Dermalogica PreCleanse, which is now available in both an oil and balm form. PreCleanse melts the layers of oil-based debris on your skin because the oil molecules bond to each other, unlike the water molecules in your usual cleanser.

These oils then emulsify when you add water, encapsulating and removing the trapped debris, and allowing your cleanser to penetrate further.

Your second cleanse should be with a cleanser that is tailored to your individual skincare needs. A skin consultation will identify what you should be using to give your skin the best results.

Take advantage of our August 30-30-30 offer and start your #30DaysToFitSkin journey.

Introducing PreCleanse Balm; the perfect companion for healthy, glowing skin

It’s been four hard days of trying to keep quiet Barnies, but finally we can reveal all; Dermalogica’s latest innovation is the PreCleanse Balm!

We had a sneak preview of the balm on Monday and we’ve all fallen in love with it.

Ever wake up in the morning to find last night’s ‘look’ smeared across your pillow? You’re not the only one. According to Dermalogica, more than half of us ladies (54%) will see make-up all over their bedding because they simply haven’t cleansed properly.

Luckily, you now have the PreCleanse balm, so no more excuses!

What does it do?

PreCleanse Balm cuts through buildup in just one application. The oil-based formula gathers grime like a magnet, so long-wear lipsticks, waterproof mascara, sunscreen and pollutants don't stand a chance!

Ideal for all skin types, especially dry, the PreCleanse Balm appears solid at first, but transforms on application into a rich, skin-conditioning oil, that melts through build-up easily without stripping the skin’s protective barrier, clogging pores or causing irritation.

It’s a water-activated, balm-to-oil version of the top-selling oil cleanser PreCleanse. It deconstructs layers of excess sebum (oil) waterproof makeup, pollution and residual product build-up on skin.

Cleansing mitt

It comes with a clever little double-sided, ergonomically-designed mitt, for enhanced cleansing and exfoliation to leave skin super clean. It thoroughly cleanses any debris from your skin’s surface, allowing your recommended cleanser to get to work and deliver better results!

On first sight you might think the mitt looks too rigid or tough, but it’s surprisingly smooth and comfortable on the skin. It fits over the tube to dry and store too - we love the design!

The balm is more travel friendly than its companion PreCleanse as it’s a solid form!

What’s in it?

Lots of lovely ingredients; apricot kernel oil to tone, firm and balance moisture; citrus and lavender essential oils to relieve mental and physical fatigue and energise skin tissues; and a natural biolipid complex to help reinforce the skin’s barrier function and preserve hydration.

How to use

Apply - work dry - emulsify! (We learnt that on Monday!) Put an almond-sized amount onto the mitt (or directly to your hand if you prefer) and massage into dry skin using circular motions. Add water to emulsify, then rinse and follow with your cleanser. So simple but super effective.

Available from The Barn Thursday 7 September.
