Our visit to Facebook HQ

You may have spotted (if you follow us on social media) that we visited Facebook HQ in London a few weeks ago.

Well, we’ve had to keep quiet until now, but now we can reveal all... The Barn has been chosen to be part of Facebook’s first SME Council!

There are 2.4 million small businesses on Facebook in the UK - and we got picked! We’re super proud and excited to be working with one of the biggest organisations in the world!

Kelly and Leah, our new PR gal, visited the London HQ and met members of Facebook’s incredible team as well as people from SMEs across the UK.

They spent some time with Facebook’s creative team, their new dedicated account executive (the lovely Tanya!) and attended workshops, feedback sessions and briefings - they also received a Facebook hoodie (we’re jealous!)

Kelly said: “It was an incredible event; the Facebook team are so enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful, and we learnt so much! We’re really looking forward to working with Tanya to raise the Barn’s profile!”

The Facebook SME (small and medium-sized enterprises) Council has brought together 15 rapidly-expanding small businesses from across the country to form the first UK SME Council - we’re delighted to be one of them!

For The Barn, it means we are able to work with the incredible team at Facebook, who will help us to better understand how to make our business thrive, as well as to share best practice and learn from other SMEs.

The Council will meet twice a year to discuss any challenges, solutions and new ideas. We can't wait!

Beauty really is skin deep

Hear from our lovely new PR girl Leah on her first ever facial - the Super Charged Facial!

I’ve always been a bit lazy when it comes to skincare. I’ve never had “bad” skin… never suffered with spots, acne, greasy skin – those typical teenage ailments seemed to pass me by (which I’m extremely grateful for). Moving into adulthood, nothing much changed. I did my best to take my make-up off at the end of the day (totally different story at the end of a night out) and I moisturised. Simple.

So, when I arrive for my Super Charged Facial with the lovely Kelly, I had no qualms. My skin is in good nick; I’m often told I look younger than my years (smug face), and I don’t really need this facial. Right?

Firstly Kelly shows me the range of products and equipment she’ll be using on my face. There’s quite a lot, but don’t be alarmed. They each do incredible things and they’re chosen based on my skin type.

Then she tests the hydration level of my skin. We’re made up of 65% water so our skin should ideally reflect that… make sense? And I moisturise all the time, so I’m going to smash this test. Right? (You can see where this is going can’t you?) So imagine my surprise when, after testing several areas of my face, I rock up at an average 30! My poor, parched skin.

“We want grapes, not raisins!” Kelly exclaims as she begins. I take it she means we want nice, firm, smooth skin, not a wrinkly, scrunched-up face. Let’s do this. Next my face receives a deep clean using a sonic brush. This takes off the day’s make-up and any build-up of old make-up, fake tan and even pollution. The vibration is super fast but comfortable.

Kelly then begins the wet/dry microdermabrasion. I can feel it gently exfoliating my skin, removing any impurities, dry bits of skin, etc., and as it infuses clean water back into my skin simultaneously, it feels really refreshing.

The ‘fascinated-by-weird-things’ part of me asks to see what the wet/dry microdermabrasion has removed. Kelly shows me a little pot of murky water which is made up of my dead skin cells, pollution, make up, fake tan… you name it. It’s ridiculously satisfying. And gross, yes.

Now it’s time to re-educate my facial muscles. They’ve gotten lazy (like my skincare routine) so we’re going to give them a boost using the latest micro-current technology. It’s essentially a non-surgical life; Kelly uses a specialist tool on different areas of my face; eyelids, smile creases, forehead… This little gadget increases my natural production of collagen and elastin, as well as increasing blood flow. I can hear Kelly chatting to herself “Good lift there, good lift…” and my inner monologue is cheering my muscles on.

Kelly then baffles me with her science knowledge (she does that a lot) – let’s talk iontophoresis. Yeah, exactly. I can’t even say it. Iontophoresis sends a mild electrical current through water and into the skin. It helps with product penetration, allowing the nutrients from the products we’ve used to penetrate into my skin during the treatment.

The science says it pushes approximately 45% more product into the skin than simply massaging it in. It’s a tingly sensation but it’s not uncomfortable.

Next Kelly places a clear hydrating mask on my face, some eye patches and a pair of protective goggles. It’s time for my LED treatment. I’m aware of some light and warmth as Kelly places the LED canopy over my face; it’s cosy and comfortable, and I relax for the next 15 minutes.

I ask Kelly to explain LED treatment to me, in a nutshell. “It’s making your cells have a rave!” The LED lights give our cells a massive boost, renewing them, increasing collagen and improving blood circulation. As well as that, it makes our skin brighter, clearer and more hydrated.

To test that theory, I ask Kelly to check my skin’s hydration levels once more. 65, 64, 56... incredible! Take that stuffy air-conned office; I will beat you! As I drive home, I find myself staring in the rear-view mirror. My skin looks so healthy; cleaner, firmer, plumper, smoother... and those pesky fine lines have disappeared.

The next morning in my bathroom, the sunlight catches my face - and my skin is absolutely glowing. What the Super Charged Facial has taught me is that I wasn’t taking good care of my skin. I was naïve and lazy, and I couldn’t see that my skin was suffering. I’m now fully committed to my daily skincare routine. I’ve bought the basics from the incredible Dermalogica range; cleanser, toner, moisturiser and the eye cream – I’m not getting any younger after all! I want my skin to look and feel this good all the time.

A huge thank you to Kelly and The Barn for my new face. I promise I won’t use facewipes ever again!

The Super Charged Facial has been designed by Kelly using the latest technology. She is no doubt a skincare specialist, both incredibly passionate and knowledgeable – the ultimate skincare geek! Ladies, if you want your skin to be at its’ very best, inside and out, book your course now. You will not regret it.

Last week Teresa, Olivia and Abbi went to the Demalogica headquaters to learn all about the #1 award winning skincare.

They spent four intensive days learning everything from the products to the treatments. For more than 30 years Dermalogica have been teaching skin health to skin therapists, we learn the best from the best. They pride themselves on being experts in the field with products and treatments that work, providing skin care products for you Barnies to take home with you to carry on the skin treatment inbetween your professional facials. We have used Dermalogica in The Barn from the very beginning as they believe (as do we) that skin health goes farther than skin deep and skin care products should contain real ingredients with real results. You will not find mineral oil, lanolin, artificial colours or fragrances or micro plastics in any Dermalogica products. All packaging is recyclable and they do not test on animals...their beliefs fit perfectly with ours!

Whilst on training the girls learnt all about the products from their ingredients, benefits and how to use them so that they can advise and help all of you when you come into The Barn for your skin treatments. They then learnt how to examine the skin by face mapping and skin analysis to help identify issues in the skin and underlying casuses, this is the platform to provide skin advice and provide the Dermalogica professional skin treatment. The treatment is completely personalised for every client as it is designed to target their key skin concern while providing the ultimate experience and achieving skin health and real results. It wasn't all work work work though, after they learnt how to prescribe the correct products and treatments they were able to carry out the treatment on each other which includes a pressure point massage for ultimate relaxation.

We cant wait for you to experience the fantastic skin treatment and Dermalogica products thats why this months offer is a Dermalogica skin treatment with face mapping skin analysis included for only £25, half the original price. The Perfect Home Manicure with Jessica Nails!

As much as we love to treat ourselves to a Jessica Geleration or Manicure the sad fact of life is that most of us generally don’t have time in our busy lifestyles to get to The Barn and maintain its upkeep.  So, on Monday evening Elouise from Jessica Nails walked us through the perfect home manicure, giving us amazing tips and tricks to maintain healthy, natural nails and improve what we already have in between trips to The Barn!

You might not have ever thought of nails as complex parts of the body, but in fact they need just as much care and attention as everything else.  So before we get started, some fingernail science for you!  A fingernail is produced by living skin cells in the finger and composed largely of keratin (a hardened protein) and consists of several parts including:

  • The nail plate (the visible part of the nail)
  • The nail bed (the skin beneath the nail plate)
  • The cuticle (the tissue that overlaps the plate and rims the base of the nail)
  • The nail folds (the skin folds that frame and support the nail on three sides)
  • The lunula (the whitish half-moon at the base of the nail)
  • The matrix (the hidden part of the nail unit under the cuticle where fingernails grow from).

In theory we all have the characterics above, but our nail types are the parts that differ between each of us.  So, the first thing Elouise got us to do was try and identify what type of nail we have by going through these next 3 steps:

1)   Look at the texture of your nails – how does it feel?

  • If it’s smooth this can indicate that your nails are moisture rich.
  • Or if your finger drags when you pull it across your nail this can indicate dryness.

2)   Look at the characteristics of your nails – what can you see?

  • Peeling - is often thought of and treated as a dry nail, when infact it can often be quite the opposite.  The nail can actually have too much moisture in it which needs to be rebalanced, causing it to grow out of the matrix too quickly and overlap the layer underneath.
  • Damage or White marks - many often think this can be down to a lack of calcium and in some cases it is, but don’t rule out other causes such as, small air pockets that get trapped between layers of your nails due to the nail layers growing out of sync, or simply wear and tear.

3)   Finally check the flexibility of your nails – how much do they bend?

  • In general, your thumb and index finger are the two that do most of the work in our day-to-day lives, so they’re going to be the firmest, whereas the little finger is usually redundant so less need for firmness. However it’s good to check the overall flexibility of your fingernails by squeezing them from either side of your nail folds.
  • If you find your nails are super bendy – this could indicate your nails are moisture rich.
  • Or if your nails are not very bendy at all/brittle - this can indicate that not enough moisture is present and can be prone to snapping close to the nail bed.

This was an interesting exercise to complete as none of us had really taken the time to have a good look at our nails before - I can almost guarantee if you're reading this now you haven't either! Depending on what results return from the mini nail examination above, there is a different Jessica treatment for each type.  Ask the girls at The Barn on your next visit if you're not sure which treatment is right for you, they'll be able to advise you!

Moving on, we looked at some ways to improve the appearance of our cuticles and natural nails.  We soaked our fingernails in a soap-free solution to soften the cuticles before gently using an Orange Stick to push back any overgrowth of the cuticle.  If you don’t have time to sit and work at grooming your cuticles, a top tip for everyday; after you wash your hands try to replace the moisture lost by using a moisturising hand emulsion, then placing your thumb in a crease of a towel and gently push your cuticles back to make them more manageable.  Also get into the habit of applying a cuticle oil in the evening such as the Jessica Phenomen oil which contains Sweet Almond oil, Rice oil, Johoba oil and Vitamin E to nourish the nails overnight.

Once your cuticles are looking good, it’s time to shape the nail.  Using an emery board (not glass or metal nail files), file in one direction straight across the top.  Then working inwards from the corner of each nail sweep inline to round off the square edges.

Finally before you apply your chosen regular Jessica nail polish or Phēnom colour, it’s best to remove any surface cream or oils that may stop the polish from setting correctly.  So Elouise suggested to us that we “squeak” our nails by using a small nail brush with a soap-free solution to wipe away excess, then rubbing in circular motions with a small towel until they are "squeaky clean!"

After you’ve completed these easy steps, your nails are perfectly prepped to apply your Jessica base coat (suited to your nail type), then apply your colour.  Check out my Phēnom blog from a couple of weeks ago to see how to use this for a longer lasting gel-look appearance, or for regular Jessica polish do apply two coats of colour and a top coat for longer lasting nails.

I think all of the ladies who came to this event would agree that this was such an informative night, and everyone went home with beautifully groomed nails!!  Thanks Elouise!

Business is Booming!

Facebook, Facebook, Facebook! Whether it’s for personal or business, let's face it most of us are on it!  According to Facebook’s 2014 Global Economic Impact report, there are “40 million small businesses using Facebook to connect with customers…$227 billion dollars of economic activity and 4.5 million jobs globally,” now that’s pretty impressive if you ask me!

One of the many ways Facebook is able to produce these astonishing figures is through Facebook for Business.  With the help of Facebook and business networks provider Enterprise Nation Facebook for Business helps SMEs understand the tools available to them in order to grow their business.

You might have remembered back in May of this year, The Barn was highlighted on the Facebook for Business page, which collected an amazing response of over 3,000 likes and 159 shares.

Thanks to this great response from the general public, earlier this month, Facebook invited Kelly to share The Barn story with other like-minded entrepreneurs at the 'Boost your Business' UK Summer Tour.  This event was hosted in Birmingham and was aimed at small and medium sized enterprises that are growing their networks and raising awareness through Facebook.

Two other business owners from PACT Coffee (online coffee delivery, responsible for fresher, better tasting coffee delivered to your door) and Kings Barber Club (the Midlands undisputed masters of traditional barbering) joined Kelly on stage, as well as a member of the Facebook team who moderated the session.

Kelly spoke about how Facebook is used to grow the business at The Barn and also shared some of her own tips for entrepreneurs in other business sectors too. The session was then opened up to a Q&A forum where Kelly and the panel answered questions directly from the audience. The morning and afternoon sessions were enjoyed by a huge attendance of over 200 business owners, marketers, press and Facebook team.

Without all of your support, none of this would have been possible, so keep liking, sharing and keeping The Barn spirit alive on Facebook!

Phēnom-inal Nails

I’m one of those girls who loves to have pretty nails, but when I’m working full time, trying to be social, fitting in workouts and trying to keep the house clean, rarely do I find the time to keep my nails looking trim - or let’s put it this way, when I do I find I’ve got a spare half an hour to myself, I’ve smudged a nail before it’s dried or it’s chipped by the time I’ve gone to work the next day! Come on girls we’ve all been there!

I do love having my nails gelled as a treat, as acrylics, however lovely they are for one occasion, quite frankly just ruin my nails for the next 6 months after!  So Kelly suggested I give the Phēnom system a whirl.

Jessica Nails is a brand we all know and love at The Barn.  Jessica Vartoughian (Founder and CEO) opened the first nails-only salon back in the 70s, and her company is now known in over 60 countries across the world! The key to her success has been understanding that no two sets of nails are alike, some of us have brittle nails, some strong, some damaged and can be short or long.  On this basis Jessica promotes premier natural nails for all!

This new range promises a polish that ‘acts like a gel, removes easily like a regular nail varnish, dries quickly in natural light, lasts up to 10 days and gives a gel-like shine.’  Jessica Phēnom has all the benefits of a gel but without the need for UV lamps or curing time.  The secret to the Phēnom formula is a, “flexible polymer in the VIVD COLOUR polish and a photo initiator in FINALE SHINE topcoat, they react together with exposure to nature light to produce a tough, chip-resistant polish with a gel-like shine”.

So I gave it a go using the 4 step method below:

1. Apply 1 coat of Basecoat – you can use any basecoat you like, but if you buy a custom Jessica Basecoat there’s more chance that the polish will last even longer and strengthen your nails at the same time.  Allow this to dry for 2 minutes.

2. Apply 1 coat of VIVID COLOUR (I tried out 024 Leading Lady), but there are 23 other shades to choose from.  Remember to seal the top edge of the nail completely. Allow 1 minute for this to dry.

3. Apply a 2nd coat of VIVID COLOUR in the same way and allow to dry for a further 1 minute.

4. Lastly, apply FINALE SHINE in the same way with plenty on your brush. It’s recommended that you paint right over the edge of where you painted on the VIVID COLOUR, otherwise it will show when it dries (due to shrinkage).

After 10 minutes the colour will be touch dry (you can smooth the top without moving the polish). It won't be set for an hour but you can get on with day-to-day activities without smudging or making a mess of your freshly painted nails.  The VIVID COLOURS and FINALE SHINE cost £13.50 each and are available to buy from The Barn.

I’ve really loved trying out this polish system, as it gives me the flexibility to change colours after 10 days by removing the colour with my regular nail polish remover, but still have great shiny colour that doesn’t chip or peel in between. This honestly is a revolution in great looking nails for girls on the go, I definitely recommend giving it a try!

Festival Fever

In only 8 days time, Somerset will welcome over 100,000 people to the biggest performing arts and greenfield music festival in the world – Glastonbury! And for the first time ever, I’ll be one of those crazy 100,000+ people swapping my double bed for a tent, bathroom for a porta-loo and dolly shoes for wellies!

However I will definitely not be leaving the house without some of my festival favourites!   Fellow Barny Maddy will also be heading to Glastonbury this year, so we decided together that the following travel-sized essentials will be every girls best friend!

For under £20 – we’ve picked out:

- Dermalogica Pre-Cleanse wipes (20pk) to wipe away the day and night! These bio-degradable wipes melt away suncream, make-up, environmental pollutants and bacteria. When you add water to the soft wipe the formula turns into a milky emulsion to rinse all of this debris away.  They’re even gentle enough for the most sensitive of eyes! Perfect for that third day in when everything’s feeling a little worse for wear!

- Dermalogica Multi-Active toner (50ml)– for instant freshness and rehydration of the skin.  As we’ll be exposed to all of the elements this handy refreshing mist is packed full of goodness including lavender, mint and aloe to condition the skin.

- Finally Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream (10ml) with lethicin to moisturise and aloe complex to keep skin hydrated.  This is my favourite Dermalogica moisturiser, so to have a mini-size version accompany me to Glastonbury allows me to remain confident that my skin won't suffer, especially if it’s sunny and water supplies are low!

Despite what some might think, I won’t be taking my usual make-up bag – instead I’ll be swapping my Mii Absolute Face Base foundation for a lighter Mii BB cream that I can apply with my fingers.  Mii’s Radiantly Fair BB cream contains amino-rich soy extracts, SPF 45, built in primer, light diffusing particles to cover imperfections, while moisturising and nourishing for a gorgeous glow. I’ll also pack some mascara, a little cream blush and my trusty EOS lip balm too.  I’m hoping for some sunshine, however my naturally pale skin means I am one of those typical Brits who burns and peels – so I’ll be applying SPF in the morning and carrying a mini tube around in my backpack too!

But at the end of the day who cares what we look like, after the first two days I’m thinking everyone’s going to look like they need a good night sleep and a shower anyway! It’s all about the music, arts, culture, food and having a good time! So if you’re going to Glastonbury this year check out their official packing list and have an awesome time, I know I will be!

Also if you’re going to any other festival this summer, remember you can pick up our festival favourites at The Barn anytime!

It's all about Mii!!!

It was great to see so many lovely faces at the Mii Make-up Evening on Monday night!  If you couldn’t make it along this time, let me fill you in!

Becky Poole from Mii Cosmetics taught us all a thing or two about make-up application and the wonderful products Mii offer, by demonstrating a full-face application on our beautiful Kelly.

She started by prepping the face with Silk Smoothing Face Prep Primer which has a soothing lavender scent and has been proven to visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles by up to 44% due to its potent peptide formula containing Matrixyl 3000 if used every day for a month.  It also doubles the production of collagen in the skin to plump dull/saggy looking cells and helps minimise large open pores.

Becky then applied the Absolute Face Base (04) with the Miracle Base Brush using only 1 pump of foundation to cover the whole face.   (My last blog post was all about this product so check it out below if you want to find out more about the ingredients and finish). Becky then went over the base with a stippling brush to even out and given an airbrush effect to the coverage.

Moving on to bronzer and blush!  Many of us use either or, but in reality we should really use both! Bronzer is great to add warmth to the face, and can be used to contour/shade off areas we don’t want to draw attention to.  Using a blusher to complement this can give a colour injection and lift areas of the face.  So using, Bronzing Face Finish with the Perfect Finish Brush Becky made a large sweeping figure of 3 around Kellys face, starting at the forehead, working down to the cheekbone and then the jawline and repeating on the opposite side.

The Blossoming Cheek Colour cream blusher (which everyone received in their Mii Beauty Bags at the end of the evening), was used to add an injection of colour and was applied by warming the cream in the hand then using the index finger to lightly pat upwards and outwards on the cheekbones. To add some luminosity to the face, Becky patted the Sublime Skin Illuminator around the top of the cheekbone area to reflect light particles as they reach the skin.

For a simple eye-look, Becky applied One and Only Eye Colour in Blink 02 (a pressed micronized mineral eyeshadow) with Mii’s Special FX brush to the first half of the eye around the socket line.  Then by softly building up the colour intensity using Haze 05 and the Defining Eye Pencil to add definition around the lid, before applying the Show Stopping Lash Lover mascara for a full lash effect.  Becky added a little lift to the brow arches by using the Brow by Mii Detailer in Medium to help fill any gaps.

For Kelly’s lovely lips, Lip Liner in Smitten was used to define the lip before applying the Silk Cream Lip Lover in Cheeky.  This new lipstick gives a great block of colour with a visibly glossy effect, so no need to apply lip gloss over the top with this one.

To finish the look, a small amount of the Pure Wonder Concealer was applied  to plump dull looking cells and help disguise grey tones under the eye area for that, I-feel-wide-awake-when-really-I’m-half-asleep-look!

At the end of the evening I had the chance to catch up with Becky after her very informative demonstration where I asked her to tell me a little bit more about her favourite Mii product.

I would choose the Forever Eye Colour Crayon in Antique 05 as it’s such an amazing product, the colour is really intense, it’s so easy to use and apply (especially for those who wear glasses) and doesn’t move all day!
— Becky Poole, Mii Cosmetics

Becky also wanted to share with you these great top tips!

  1. Washing your make-up brushes on a regular basis (however boring it may be) means there’s less chance of spreading bacteria around your face and encouraging breakouts! So for synthetic brushes pour some baby shampoo/sensitive soap in the palm of your hand, swirl the brush around and then rinse with warm water.  Try to be delicate with the brush as you don't want to break the bristles, then leave to dry on a clean towel overnight!
  2. The Mii Blossoming Cheek Colour cream blush has a lovely vanilla scent and can double up as a lip balm too so it makes such a versatile handbag purchase!

All of the products are available at The Barn so if you couldn't make it to this event and would like to be colour matched for any of the Mii Cosmetics range, arrange an appointment with one of the therapists.  See you all soon Barnies!

Check out Becky's Facebook page for more information about Mii, or visit the Mii cosmetics webpage.

Hands up for flawless foundation!?

Ladies, summer is just around the corner, so if you’re thinking of buying a fresh, light, radiant new foundation, then look no further than newest addition to the Mii make up minerals range – Absolute Face Base.

Lots of people ask me what foundation I wear, and to be honest I do mix it up a little depending on what my skin is feeling like on the day, whether I’m going to an evening event and want a little more coverage or just everyday workwear and looking for a more natural appearance.   However since I bought Absolute Face Base in 01 Fresh I have been ever so slightly obsessed! It’s perfect day or night! Yes day or night this gives exceptional coverage with a feather-light feel.  You really only need a small amount, dotting on your nose, cheekbones, forehead and jawline, and apply after your moisturiser, either with your fingertips, complexion sponge or for a truly professional finish use the Mii Base Brush.

I tend to have slightly drier skin that can be problematic when finding the right foundation, that doesn’t dry your skin out even more!  But the Mii Absolute Face Base has a natural Pomegranate Complex to actively lock in moisture, Gotu Kola extract to help with cell renewal and an SPF 30 to protect your skin, so not only do you look flawlessly fresh, but your skin feels perfectly hydrated and protected from the sun too.  To me it’s a winner all round!

You probably will have seen the Mii cosmetics stand at The Barn but not necessarily in shops or department stores.  That’s because Mii is a cosmetics range which has taken feedback from thousands of women who use beauty salons across the world and developed a totally new range of make up to give each and every one of us the confidence to create a look that is totally unique.  I love that it’s exclusively available in spas, salons and select online stores, it makes this product feel even more special!

It’s really reasonably priced at £26.50 for 30ml (comes in 5 shades) and complements the rest of the Mii cosmetics range and Dermalogica Skincare products.  I usually pair this foundation with the products posted below, which are Mineral Radiant Blush (02 Inspire), Mineral Exquisite Eye Colour (01 Glimmer, 02 Grace) and Mii perfect brow pencil (Focus).

If you want to give this foundation a try I really recommend you getting colour matched with the girls at The Barn, or sign up for the Mii Cosmetics event on the 1st June to find out more about the whole range!  If you've got this foundation already, I would love for you to let me know what you think of it by commenting below!

Learning from the experts!

I went along to the Dermalogica skincare event at The Barn last night where I met with Maddy, Carly and Tamara from The Barn, Gemma from Dermalogica HQ and many other beautiful ladies eager to learn more about the new PowerBright TRx products and Dermalogica Bio-Surface peel.

PowerBright TRX is the newest addition to the Dermalogica family to help combat hyper-pigmentation.  It’s great to use alongside all of the Dermalogica lines and can be purchased at The Barn.  It has 3 parts to the treatment, a day cream containing a high SPF, a serum (which can be used twice per day) and a night cream.  I’ll be doing a separate blog post on how I get on testing this product so stay tuned for the results!

You might wonder what hyper-pigmentation is? I learnt from the experts at the event, that hyper-pigmentation can be caused by sun damage, inflammation or other skin injuries where an excess production of melanin in the lower layer of the epidermis occurs.

If you suffer from hyper-pigmentation you may wonder how you can reduce the appearance of these effects? Gemma from Dermalogica informed us of the ways to do just this and to keep your skin looking and feeling bright.  She gave us these useful tips!

  • Exfoliation is key, it helps to increase cell turnover, remove dull/dead cells and help with collagen synthesis.  As newer skin cells come to the surface, they appear a lot plumper as they are full of lipids and your skin becomes better at producing collagen by itself.
  • Drinking water is a no-brainer and we all know we should drink more of it to keep cells hydrated, so get your water bottles out Barnies and be mindful of your caffeine intake!
  • Micro-zone treatments are 20-minute skin treatments that can really help with skin brightening, although harder to combat hyper-pigmentation in this short amount of time.
  • In addition to homecare products, the girls at The Barn are all trained to do a skin treatment called the Bio-surface peel.  This is a biphasic chemical peel, meaning it performs a heavier duty exfoliation that only affects the dermal layer of your skin with no downtime -  unlike medical grade peels you may have read about.  Maddy performed a demonstration of this treatment so we could see what is involved!

This powerful new skin system developed by the International Skin Institute helps improve scarring, hyperpigmentation, signs of premature ageing and encourage smoother, brighter and softer skin.  This treatment does require you to have a patch test conducted 24hours prior to ensure you don't have any allergic reactions to the products. There are 4 steps to this particular facial which I have outlined below for you:

  1. Prep Solution: salicylic acid helps dissolve and remove any excess dirt/oils and prepares the skin for the rest of the treatment.
  2. Enzyme Active: powerful plant enzymes unlink your skin cells and help digest skin proteins to help the following layers of acid penetrate further.
  3. Acid Active: your skin is assessed for the recommended amount of acid applications (which can range from 3-5 depending on your skin type).
  4. De-celerator: is applied to restore your skin to natural pH and stop the chemical reactions continuing beyond their allocated time on the skin.  After this stage, the girls apply  moisturiser and an SPF (to almost over-protect the skin), either Super Sensitive Shield or Ultra Sensitive Tint.  Dermalogica recommend these two SPFs as they are ‘physical only’ sunscreens which means they contain minerals and reflect/block UV rays as opposed to ‘chemical sunscreens’ that absorb UV rays into the skin.

After you have had 3 Bio-surface peels you receive a mini sample kit to use especially during the first 2 days after the peel to ensure your skin is properly protected against UV-A and UV-B rays.

I knew that the skin was a complex organ but wow I’ve learnt so much in just 2 hours and really have been inspired to protect it! Personally, having naturally fair skin and and freckles I’ll certainly be protecting my skin against UV-exposure even on days when it isn’t as sunny! I hope you’ve enjoyed reading Barnies and learnt a little bit more about PowerBright TRx and the Bio-surface peel available at The Barn, I know I have! Until next time, keep your skin safe!

P.S. If you’ve tried the PowerBright TRx or had the Bio-surface peel, I’d love to know how you got on? Comment below with your experience and results?

Official Launch!

Hello Barnies,

I’d like to start my blog at The Barn with a celebratory one!

A few Sunday’s ago on a blissfully sunny spring afternoon, The Barn opened its doors to clients, suppliers, local businesses, designers, press, accountants, bar men, family and friends to celebrate the official launch of its new location in Loxton.

Made from all natural materials and nestled in the heart of a rural Somerset landscape The Barn is a rustic retreat in itself, but today felt especially wonderful as it was filled with such inspiring people. Each and every person I spoke to had a unique connection with The Barn.  Among these people I met Juliette the nutritional therapist at The Barn to tell me about the power smoothies she had made for the event.  A mixture of banana’s, almond milk, linseed, raspberries and coconut oil went into the refreshing pick-me-up.  They tasted incredible and an easy recipe to make at home!

Belle Studio hosted the Silver Trailer where a selection of props were available for everyone to take some awesome Photo Booth pics!  CandyPop Hire were supplying freshly popped popcorn, which filled the air with a beautifully sweet aroma and made the perfect accompaniment to the juicy cocktails supplied at the Barn bar!

Not only was this day a celebration of the official opening, but to recognise The Barn's outstanding achievement of being runners up to Harrods at the Professional Beauty Awards in the Salon of the Year 2015 (4 rooms or more category)! Well done team!

Over the next few months, I hope you’ll join me in finding out more about the latest products, events and treatments on offer as I write reviews and keep you updated with the latest news at The Barn.

Thanks for reading, come back soon Barnies :)

P.S. Feel free to comment and let me know if there’s anything in particular you’d like to see in this space and I’ll do my very best to provide you with the inside scoop!
