Stay happy and healthy this winter

The change in season is well upon us and, like most people, here at The Barn we’ve been chatting about the darker days, the colder weather and that overwhelming urge to stay indoors.

So, between us, we’ve come up with a list of top tips to keep us happy and healthy through the winter months - and we thought we’d share it with you!

Eat healthy

’Tis the season for hearty, comfort foods, but that doesn’t mean you can’t eat healthy during the winter. At The Barn, we’ll still be tucking into plenty of fruit and vegetables, hearty stews and winter smoothies.

Check out this delicious lentil and chorizo soup recipe from our resident Nutritional Therapist Juliette.

Stay hydrated

In the summer, we really focus on keeping hydrated and drinking plenty of water, however in winter bad habits creep back in and Costa try to lure us in with those Pumpkin Spiced Lattes…

The truth is you need to maintain your water intake no matter the season. Water not only keeps us hydrated but also helps regulate body temperature (key to staying warm in winter) and is essential to the function of cells, tissues and organs. It’s also key to healthy, glowing skin!

We’ve been trying out some new flavours at The Barn; try infusing your water with winter flavours such as cranberry and orange - delicious! Eating fresh fruit is also an excellent source of water!

Stay active

We know it’s difficult to stay motivated to exercise during the winter, but there are simple ways to get an endorphin-boost without hitting the gym.

Being in the countryside, we’re firm believers in the simple power of fresh air. Briony’s been getting her hit by taking the lovely Max out for a walk; Leah’s been hiking up Crook Peak after work. Find what works for you because fresh air is definitely good for the soul!

Rest up and get some ‘me-time'

Regular sleep is vital to staying healthy; don’t let yourself get run down. Book in some me-time; whether that’s reading a book, relaxing with a cuppa or treating yourself to a massage with us. It’s important to rest, relax and unwind.

Protect your skin

Drier, colder air, harsh central heating, sudden temperature changes… these all suck moisture fro your skin, so you're more likely to experience dryness and flakiness. Now’s the time to amp up your skincare routine and swap your usual products for richer, more nourishing alternatives.

You could give your skin a little boost with Phyto Replenish Oil from Dermalogica (we have a cute Christmas stocking filler size in at the moment!) This feather-light treatment oil rapidly absorbs to reinforce the skin’s protective barrier.

We hope our tips help you stay happy and healthy for winter Barnies! If all else fails, come and visit us!

6 ways to autumn-proof your skin

The change in season doesn't just call for a different wardrobe and a cosier home. Everything from cooler weather to spending too much time in dry, stuffy indoor environments, can deprive your skin of moisture.

Skin gets worn out by seasonal changes and cries out for richer moisturisers and comforting ingredients. It craves products and treatments that will give it back its glow; this is the time for hydrating masks, peels and facials.

Change your routine

Humidity levels drop off in the autumn and winter months. The drier the air, the more moisture it sucks from your skin, so you're more likely to experience dryness and flakiness.

Ideally, you want to amp up your skincare routine as the season changes and swap your products for richer, more nourishing alternatives.

“Just as you change your clothes with changing temperatures you should do the same with your skincare regimen” says skin expert Kelly Hooper. “You need to switch up your lightweight summer moisturiser to a more heavy duty cream."

Harsh central heating

If you haven’t done so already, you'll no doubt be switching on your heating sometime soon, and unfortunately it’s not going to do your skin any favours. "Heated air inside causes low humidity, which leads to water evaporating from our skin” says Kelly. "This can cause cracking, flaking and irritation and leave skin with a lacklustre, parched appearance.”

Give your skin a little boost with Phyto Replenish Oil. This feather-light treatment oil rapidly absorbs to reinforce the skin’s protective barrier. Wear it alone or layered under foundation for all-season dewy skin.

A handy tip is placing a few bowls of water near your radiators, as well as drinking lots of water and slapping on your rich moisturiser along with a replenishing lip balm and hand cream. Keep that skin hydrated!

Sudden temperature changes

During winter, our skin has to confront wind, cold and temperature changes between heated homes and the freezing outdoors.

Going from the cold outdoors into centrally-heated buildings and vice-versa can take its toll on your complexion. "This process causes the capillaries in your face to contract and expand rapidly leading to broken veins and skin redness," says Kelly.

Wrap up warm in the cold and try not to overdo it on the central heating. A light layer of barrier cream, such as Dermalogica’s Barrier Repair, will help protect the skin.

Hot baths and showers

When temperatures plummet, a hot bath or shower is really enticing. Sorry to rain on your parade but try to resist the temptation for the sake of your complexion if you can. Hot baths and showers can dissolve the protective barrier in the skin which will eventually lead to dryness. Opt for warm instead.

Drink more water

In the summer, we really focus on keeping hydrated and drinking plenty of water. Your skin is your largest organ and therefore needs hydration; it’s key to healthy, glowing skin. Our advice - swap that pumpkin spiced latte for a bottle of water. You’ll feel super smug and your skin will thank you for it!

Wear SPF

Yes, even on cloudy days! You may tend to ease up on applying sunscreen now that cooler weather has arrived but you absolutely need sun protection during the cooler months. The sun’s harmful rays are just as strong and damaging - despite the temperature - and they can really age your skin. Opt for a moisturiser that contains a high SPF. We love Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Recovery which contains SPF 50 and is super hydrating and nourishing.

Chemical peel: separating the myths from the facts

Chemical peels have a bad reputation. I’m sure I’m not the only one who hears those two words and pictures Samantha’s red, peeling face from that episode of 'Sex and the City'.

Chemical peels are the skin care treatment that is shrouded in the most mystery. So, I’ve decided to quiz my fellow Barnies and separate the myths from the facts:

Myth: You have to hide your face after a chemical peel

Fact: Contrary to the aforementioned Samantha scene, a professional chemical peel will not leave you with damaged, inflamed or flaking skin. There is no need to go into hiding!

Dermalogica’s Bioactive Surface Peel has an advanced formula that not only provide controlled penetration throughout the epidermis, but also soothes and hydrates, leaving your skin smoother, brighter and firmer with zero downtime.

Myth: Chemical peels hurt

Fact: You may experience a little tingling, tightness, or a change in temperature, but it will not hurt. Your skin therapist will continuously ask questions to make sure no sensation is too extreme.

You may experience slight increased sensitivity afterwards, so to avoid any irritation or discomfort don’t exfoliate for a few days and drink plenty of water!

Myth: You can’t wear makeup for days afterwards

Fact: Whilst it is best to wait as long as possible on the day of the treatment to apply makeup, we understand that some clients want to apply it right away the good news is, you can! We do suggest waiting 20 minutes and using mineral-based makeup as it’s kinder to the skin. This gives your skin time to calm down and reduces the possibility of irritation.

Myth: A chemical peel won’t have any impact on my skin

Fact: Chemical peels with modern formulas – like the Dermalogica’s Bioactive Surface Peel – include a combination of multiple exfoliating acids (like glycolic, lactic and fruit acids) that will tighten the skin, unclog pores, improve lines, and leave skin super smooth.

They can also help with: congestion, breakouts, luminosity, premature ageing and hyperpigmentation.

Myth: Having a chemical peel is a one-time solution

Fact: Skin health is like going to the gym; it’s your commitment that will lead to visible results! Peels need to be done on a consistent basis for the best outcome. Take advantage of our monthly offer and save money on a course of three peels.

Myth: Chemical peels are only beneficial for those with problem skin

Fact: While there are chemical peels that specifically target acne, acne scarring or sun spots, the most popular use of chemical peels is for skin regeneration so they’re ideal for anyone who wants to improve the look of their skin.

Chemical peels can be beneficial for most skin types including sensitive skin.

Myth: Chemical peels are bad for you

Fact: The word chemical might not sound like something you should ever put on your skin, but when performed correctly, chemical peels are a safe way to improve your skin. Many chemical peels actually use naturally occurring acids found in fruits in the case of alpha hydroxy acid, and other foods like sugar cane in the case of glycolic peels.

Hopefully we’ve answered some of your questions Barnies, but, as always, if you have any more, give us a call or send us a message - we’re happy to help!

Why now is the perfect time for a chemical peel...

When the temperature drops and there’s less moisture in the air, your skin tends to be drier. As it turns out, that’s the best time for a chemical peel.

After the summer, your skin can be dry and damaged. Chemical peels are designed to safely remove dull outer layers of skin and help the skin underneath regenerate for a smooth, radiant complexion.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What is a Bioactive™ Surface Peel?

A Bioactive Surface Peel is a professional chemical peel by Dermalogica designed to resurface the skin with minimal recovery time. The unique, multi-phase approach works with the skin’s biology to safely slough away dull epidermal layers and accelerate cell renewal without inflammation and the prolonged downtime typically associated with chemical peels.

this one leah w.png

What does it do?

Our skin therapists can help design a series of treatments to address your specific needs, whether you're looking to address photoageing, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone or acne breakouts.

A BioActive Surface Peel can also be used to:

  • Decrease surface roughness
  • Stimulate cell turnover and collagen production
  • Brighten the skin
  • Minimise the apprearance of pigmentation.

How does is work?

Chemical peels work by removing the outer layers of the skin. The depth of the peeling is determined by the chemical agent used and the concentration, amongst other factors.

Following a chemical peel, the deeper layers of the skin will respond by regenerating new skin and by increasing the production of collagen. The result is a look that's smoother and more youthful.

Do I need a patch test?

Yes, a patch test and skin consultation must be carried out at 24 hours before treatment - there is no charge for this.

How long is the treatment?

Approximately 45 minutes.

How many do I need? Your skin therapist will assess your skin and advise you. We recommend

a course of maximum results.

Take advantage of our current offer:

Bioactive Surface Peel peel £60 (normally £75) + a free aftercare kit Course of 3 for £150 (normally £210)

Book your consultation and patch test online.

*Only valid for October.

Kelly spent the day at Facebook HQ in London yesterday after being invited to sit on a panel of guest speakers from businesses across the UK.

About 80 members of the Facebook team quizzed Kelly and the panel about their use of Facebook, marketing challenges and advertising, etc., to gain their views and help them to help businesses grow!

This follows on from The Barn being invited to join their SME council back in May.

We are super proud of Kelly and all of Team Barn!

Recipe for great skin

Even the most skin-savvy girl would agree that the sheer number of skincare products available can be overwhelming.

Then you start delving into their ingredients = mind blown. From antioxidants to retinol; peptides to AHAs; what do they do? Do they work? Are they right for your skin type?

We like to be helpful at The Barn so we’ve compiled a handy list of the most common skincare products ingredients.

Antioxidants protect your skin by defending it against pollution and environmental damage. You can’t see it happening but your skin takes a daily beating from pollution and environmental stressors, which can lead to sagging, wrinkles and dull skin tone.

Antioxidants in skincare products can do a lot for the health and appearance of your skin. They not only help combat the elements responsible for the visible signs of ageing, but can also calm skin, help reveal a more youthful appearance and revitalise dull-looking skin.

Just like your body needs a mix of healthy nutrients, so does your skin; it’s your largest organ after all.

Tip: Look for ingredients such as green tea, white tea, flaxseed oil - all super antioxidants!

Retinol is simply another name for vitamin A. It works to increase cell turnover, stimulate collagen and elastin production, fade hyperpigmentation, and help skin stay hydrated and glowing without irritation.

It helps even your skin tone, tighten your pores, plumps and smoothes the surface of the skin as well as fading fine lines.

Tip: Retinol is best best applied at nighttime because it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. This means it’s important to put an SPF on in the morning too!

Many AHAs are derived from organic sugars. They prevent the build up of dead skin cells, so they're great essentially as an exfoliant to smooth the skin’s surface. They also stop pores from being blocked and can help brighten your skin tone.

AHAs remove the need for harsh scrubs in those that prefer to avoid manual exfoliation. Particular ingredients to look for on product labelling are glycolic acid or salycic acid.

Tip: AHAs also increase photosensitivity so make sure you wear a sunscreen daily (see below).

new blog - recipe for good skin.png

Peptides are the building blocks of proteins. The most commonly known proteins in the skin are collagen, elastin and keratin, which are responsible for our skin’s texture and tone; making the skin plumper, smoother and firmer.

Different types of peptides have different effects, from smoothing wrinkles or repairing barrier function to increasing firmness and hydration.

Tip: Peptides tend to be found in leave-on products, usually in the anti-ageing range.

Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the human body and is also produced synthetically for use in skincare.

Hyaluronic acid is renowned for its ability to retain moisture, making it a common ingredient in hydrating serums and moisturisers. Since it can absorb up to a thousand times its own weight in water, it has the ability to instantly plump skin and smooth wrinkles, as well as helping skin repair itself more quickly.

It’s a great everyday product for achieving smooth, plumped, hydrated skin.

Tip: Hyaluronic acid is a great way to hydrate oily skin without clogging pores, whilst it is gentle enough for sensitive skin types.

There's no question on how important sunscreen is. Being in the sun without the right protection, or long exposure to the sun, increases the risks of skin diseases and guarantees early skin ageing.

Tip: Choose a moisturiser that contains SPF as UV is present even on a cloudy day.

While you may be getting enough vitamins from your fruit and vegetables, or from supplements, you may not know the benefits of having these nutrients in your skincare regime.

Certain nutrients are essential for preventing and reversing many signs of skin ageing. For example, Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant with UV protective properties. It also helps to protect and repair the skin, boost collagen and reduce pigmentation.

Vitamin A is also a great multi-tasker - it boosts collagen, reduces inflammation, reduces pigmentation and helps to control oil production (sebum) and spots. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin. Vitamin B is great for healing… we could go on.

Tip: You really are what you eat. Think of your food as part of your skincare routine for more radiant, youthful skin.

So Barnies, hopefully our guide will help you next time you are choosing skincare products. If you need any further advice or tips, ask one of our incredible skin therapists.

What did your cleanser leave behind?

Everyone knows to cleanse their skin twice daily, but most people don’t realise that a single cleanse still leaves behind a layer of oil-based debris, such as sunscreen, long-lasting make-up, pollution and your skin’s own sebum (oil).

This is because your usual cleanser simply cannot fully penetrate the barrier this oil-based debris creates, resulting in dull, congested skin.

So, what is double cleansing?

Double-cleansing is simply the act of removing your make-up and SPF, excess sebum and dead skin until all grime and build-up are removed - then you can get down to actually cleaning your skin.

The first cleanse should remove make up, bacteria and dirt from the skin. The second cleanse should target your skin care needs to deeply cleanse and care for the skin, as well as prepping the skin for your serums and moisturiser to maximise their absorption.

The Barn recommends...

We recommend Dermalogica PreCleanse, which is now available in both an oil and balm form. PreCleanse melts the layers of oil-based debris on your skin because the oil molecules bond to each other, unlike the water molecules in your usual cleanser.

These oils then emulsify when you add water, encapsulating and removing the trapped debris, and allowing your cleanser to penetrate further.

Your second cleanse should be with a cleanser that is tailored to your individual skincare needs. A skin consultation will identify what you should be using to give your skin the best results.

Introducing PreCleanse Balm; the perfect companion for healthy, glowing skin

It’s been four hard days of trying to keep quiet Barnies, but finally we can reveal all; Dermalogica’s latest innovation is the PreCleanse Balm!

We had a sneak preview of the balm on Monday and we’ve all fallen in love with it.

Ever wake up in the morning to find last night’s ‘look’ smeared across your pillow? You’re not the only one. According to Dermalogica, more than half of us ladies (54%) will see make-up all over their bedding because they simply haven’t cleansed properly.

Luckily, you now have the PreCleanse balm, so no more excuses!

What does it do?

PreCleanse Balm cuts through buildup in just one application. The oil-based formula gathers grime like a magnet, so long-wear lipsticks, waterproof mascara, sunscreen and pollutants don't stand a chance!

Ideal for all skin types, especially dry, the PreCleanse Balm appears solid at first, but transforms on application into a rich, skin-conditioning oil, that melts through build-up easily without stripping the skin’s protective barrier, clogging pores or causing irritation.

It’s a water-activated, balm-to-oil version of the top-selling oil cleanser PreCleanse. It deconstructs layers of excess sebum (oil) waterproof makeup, pollution and residual product build-up on skin.

Cleansing mitt

It comes with a clever little double-sided, ergonomically-designed mitt, for enhanced cleansing and exfoliation to leave skin super clean. It thoroughly cleanses any debris from your skin’s surface, allowing your recommended cleanser to get to work and deliver better results!

On first sight you might think the mitt looks too rigid or tough, but it’s surprisingly smooth and comfortable on the skin. It fits over the tube to dry and store too - we love the design!

The balm is more travel friendly than its companion PreCleanse as it’s a solid form!

What’s in it?

Lots of lovely ingredients; apricot kernel oil to tone, firm and balance moisture; citrus and lavender essential oils to relieve mental and physical fatigue and energise skin tissues; and a natural biolipid complex to help reinforce the skin’s barrier function and preserve hydration.

How to use

Apply - work dry - emulsify! (We learnt that on Monday!) Put an almond-sized amount onto the mitt (or directly to your hand if you prefer) and massage into dry skin using circular motions. Add water to emulsify, then rinse and follow with your cleanser. So simple but super effective.

Available from The Barn Thursday 7 September.

Why your skin should be your biggest investment

The first thing people see when they meet you is your face, so why wouldn’t you want to take care of it?

Personally, I love buying new makeup, handbags and whatever the latest trend in fashion is (I’m currently the owner of 432 Bardot tops), but I also invest in my skin. After all, you only get one face in this lifetime…

Here are a few reasons why you should be investing in your skin:

It’s important for your general health

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, so just like your body, it needs looking after too. It faces challenges such as harsh abrasion, pollution, sunlight and detergents, so it would seem silly to do anything other than care for it with a consistent skincare routine.

Your future self will thank you for it

As well as improving the appearance of your skin now, your future skin will thank you for looking after it! Having regular skin treatments can help prevent against premature fine lines and wrinkles as well as dehydration.

Regular use of appropriate skincare products (particularly ones with an SPF) and treatments will also help protect your skin against environmental damage, slow down thew signs of ageing and ensure your skin looks its best in the future.

Look good and feel good

If you invest in your skin you’re going to look good and feel good. Simple. Your skin will look brighter, healthier, more vibrant, plumper, more evenly toned… shall I go on?

Good skin = confidence. With a clear and bright complexion, you’re bound to feel more confident and comfortable in yourself. I know when I’ve had “bad face” days in the past, nothing has worked; my hair; my clothes… urgh. The compliments about your new, glowing skin will definitely give you a boost!

Makeup works better

It’s important to remember that makeup will only look as good as the skin underneath. With good, hydrated skin, makeup sits more evenly, looks flawless and more healthy. You may even need less makeup once your skin is at its best!

Consistency leads to visible results

You have to be patient. Dramatic improvements don’t happen overnight. With a tailored routine you will start to notice small changes quickly, but it’s your commitment to your skincare regime that will really pay off.

You’ll understand your skin better

You don't know what’s best for your skin until you become better acquainted with it. There is a huge range of products available to you, and yes, it can be overwhelming, but that’s why having a prescribed regime is so helpful! Knowing what your skin needs and can benefit from is what will lead to healthy, glowing skin!

It’s important to remember that no approach to skin care can be the same; long term it’s the advice from the experts that will see your regimen go from skin-care-novice to beauty-authority.

My journey to fit skin

I started my Dermalogica journey in February this year.

Previously I was a ‘facewipe-in-the-evening-if-I-remembered’ kinda girl, slapped on a bit of moisturiser (any!) and that was that. I had no obvious skin issues; a few fine lines here and there (well, I am 35!), a bit of dryness, but no real complaints.

However, each time I visited The Barn I was met with dewy, luminous skin - and I wanted it. What made their skin look so healthy and glowing? The answer was Dermalogica.

As Kelly says: "There's no reason why anyone can't have great skin!” No matter what your skin type or condition, there are products in the Dermalogica range that will work for you.

So, I began my Dermalogica journey...

I started with the dry skin kit (the contents of which have changed slightly since) containing the Essential Cleansing Solution, the Multi-Active Toner, Intensive Moisture Balance and the Intensive Eye Repair. I quickly got into a routine; as our lovely skin therapists say, "It can be done in an ad break!”, and I soon began to see the benefits.

My skin felt cleaner (no wonder!), refreshed and seriously more hydrated. It felt softer, plumper and was more luminous. More so, I enjoyed the routine and felt like I was making a positive difference to my skin.

Months on and my routine has essentially stayed the same. I’ve added a few products here and there, and I continue to try new products as they launch as well as listening to the advice of the experts around me. I really care about what I put in and on my skin now.

Adding some new AGE smart products to my regime has really boosted my skin (thanks Briony!) Lately friends whom I haven't seen for a while, comment on my skin when they greet me! And I know my skin is better; it’s more hydrated, it’s softer, it’s firmer. I can feel it and I can see it.

Here’s my new daily skincare routine:

Essential Cleansing Solution

Your skin is hard at work overnight, detoxifying and regenerating, leaving a layer of dead cells on the surface of the skin. Urgh. So yes, a quick wipe over of this in the morning is a must!

Multi-Active Toner

A few spritzes of this ultra-light, hydrating toner follows. Using a toner allows for better moisture absorption; getting your skin ready for all the goodness on its way. It’s so refreshing and not remotely uncomfortable on my skin as previous toners have been.

Dynamic Skin Recovery

This is a super hydrating anti-ageing product. I added it to my regime because it has an SPF in which my previous moisturiser didn't. I really want to protect my skin. It’s lightweight, silky and smells lovely.

I'm slowly adding to my Derma collection and recently bought Precleanse. Precleanse is the first step of the Dermalogica Double Cleanse regime. The oil grips hold of makeup, suncream, sebum, any dirt and pollution on the face… Adding water turns it into a milky residue which lifts the debris and leaves my skin feeling squeaky clean!

Essential Cleansing Solution and Multi-Active Toner (as above)

Super Rich Repair

Super Rich Repair is a thick, heavyweight cream that tackles dry, dehydrated skin whilst you sleep and replenishes your skin's moisture levels. A little goes a long way! I absolutely love the way my skin feels in the morning after using this; soft, super hydrated and plump. It's delicious!

Nightly Lip Treatment

I only have a sample of this at the moment so haven't been using it long, but already I can see that my fine smile lines have disappeared! I suffer from dry lips and this product is divine; it’s tingly (in a good way), super moisturising and non-greasy - I’ll definitely be buying it!

Age Reversal Eye Complex

A grain-of-rice-sized amount completes my routine. Slowly improving my dark circles; a super gentle and nourishing cream.

So there it is - my new skincare routine. Looking at it, I can’t believe how different my routine is now. It may seem like a lot of work, but it really isn’t. It doesn't take me any longer than five minutes - honest! And as Dermalogica say, I’m making an investment in my future skin.

Mineral makeup - changing the face of beauty

Experts are saying that mineral makeup is changing the face of beauty; that it is kinder to our skin and provides a flawless finish.

Kelly Hooper, Makeup Artist and Director of The Barn, tells us why every woman should try mineral makeup.

It’s healthier for your skin

Conventional makeup contains chemicals, oils, fragrances and other additives that can either irritate sensitive skin or cause unnecessary breakouts. Mineral make-up is non-comedogenic, meaning it doesn't seep into and clog your pores.

“Mineral makeup lets your skin breathe while still offering protection. Containing only natural minerals, the benefit for the health of your skin is immense!” says Kelly.

It’s suitable for all skin types

Dry, oily or combination skin; mineral makeup works well for every skin type. If you’re prone to acne or sensitive skin, mineral makeup is perfect for you. “Dermatologists and skincare professionals often use mineral makeup to help protect their clients’ sensitive skin” says Kelly.

It's long lasting

Mineral powders stay put! You won’t find them running off your skin in the heat or water, and they are completely smudge-free! “The pigment lasts a long time and a little goes a long way. With mineral foundation, using very little can give a basic coverage” says Kelly.

It’s a natural sun screen

Used alongside your daily SPF, mineral makeup foundation can actually help defend your skin against the sun. There are two types of sunscreen; physical and chemical (the type you buy). Physical sunscreen contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide; the two minerals most commonly found in mineral makeup.

It’s versatile

“When mineral makeup is done right, it is much more versatile than most makeup” says Kelly. “You can mix the mineral foundation with water, moisturisers and cremes to make a liquid foundation consistency if that's what you like. You can conceal with it or just use it as a light coverage.” she adds.

Loose powder mineral pigments can turn into anything you can think of; eyeshadow, eyeliner, body shimmer, blush, etc. When working with the pure pigment it blends with almost anything.

Mineral makeup is cruelty-free

We use the Mii cosmetics range” says Kelly. “None of their products nor raw ingredients have ever been tested on animals. They have, however, been tested on a panel of willing beauty lovers!”

It has a longer shelf life

“No-one likes having to throw makeup away because it’s gone past its best” says Kelly. Mineral makeup has a very long shelf life because it is super simple; it doesn’t harbour bacteria because there is no organic material in it for the bacteria to grow.

Mineral makeup at The Barn

The Barn stocks the full Mii cosmetics range. Mii cosmetics are only available in selected salons and spas.

What is micellar water and does it really work?

This week our lovely Briony has been using the Comfort Zone micellar water as part of her daily skincare routine.

She's been chatting about it in The Barn, so we thought we'd ask her what the deal is... what is micellar water and how does it work?

Micellar water is a multi-active water for cleansing the face, eyes and lips in one go.

Designed to be wiped away with a cotton pad rather than rinsed off, micellar water is made up of cleansing micelle particles suspended in soft water. These tiny oil particles draw makeup (including waterproof mascara), sebum and impurities from the skin without the need for harsh chemicals.

Briony said: "I struggle with traditional eye makeup removers; they're either too harsh and make my eyes feel sensitive, or they leave an oily film.

"Comfort Zone micellar water isn't specifically aimed at sensitive skin but it's worked really well for me. It removed all makeup (without the need to rinse) and left my skin feeling really fresh and super hydrated!"

"I'd never used a micellar product before but I would definitely recommend this one!" added Briony.

We know that trying to keep up with trends in skincare can be challenging. From exfoliating to cleansing to toning and moisturising; it can be hard to know what you’re supposed to be doing and when. However with micellar water proving a firm favourite with supermodels and Briony, it might just be the next thing we add to our routine!

Comfort Zone's Micellar Water is available from The Barn, priced at £24.

Everything you need to know about intimate waxing

We’re in the midst of holiday season and some of you may be considering having your first-ever Brazilian or Hollywood wax.

We understand that the idea of being half naked and having every hair removed from your nether regions may be a bit intimidating, so to ease your mind we’ve pulled together a bit of a rundown of how we do it at The Barn.

Yes, you will be half-naked

Firstly, yes, you will have to remove your bottoms. Underwear/ disposable undies just get in the way for the Brazilian and Hollywood, and we want to make sure you have the best results. We’ll leave you to remove your bottoms and tuck yourself under a towel on our super comfy beds. When you’re ready we’ll come back in and make a start.

Everyone feels a bit self-conscious

Remember, our therapists are professionals; they've seen it all before and perform these waxes every day. Whilst we appreciate that being half-naked can be uncomfortable, and you may think you’re the hairiest person in the world (you’re not!); to us it’s all very normal and your worries are totally unnecessary.

Yes, we do see your butt!

The Brazilian and Hollywood remove a lot more hair than your average bikini wax. The Brazilian typically leaves just a landing strip/ small triangle of hair at the front, and all hair removed down below and yes, round the back! The Hollywood is total hair removal, front to back. As we said; we've seen it all before...

No downward-dog here

We’ve very much about preserving your dignity and we want you to be comfortable; we won’t ask you to lie with your butt in the air. For the majority of your treatment (15 - 20 minutes) you’ll be in a standard waxing position; one leg bent up at the knee and the other bent flat on the bed at a right angle, exposing one side of your bikini line.

And then?

After the top and side sections, we’ll move on to the more intimate area. Yes, there is some waxing of the labia involved, and we may have to adjust you here and there to get your skin taut. It's not quite as awkward as it sounds, but we think it's important to know, and it is to ensure you get the best results!

For the last bit (yes, the butt bit) we’ll ask you to lift your legs and hold them up. Thispart takes approximately 5 minutes, and then you’re done!

Does it hurt?

We use Lycon wax; with its low temperature it provides a much more comfortable treatment and is 50% less painful than traditional waxing. Every client is different though and there may be some areas that have more of a sting than others. There’s no tweezing involved as Lycon gets every last hair!

Most of our clients are surprised to find the area around your bottom doesn't really hurt and they love the final result!

Waxing is one of our most popular treatments. Find out more.

Sublime skin deluxe lift

We’ve been prepping for our next client who will be enjoying the sublime skin deluxe lift from Comfort Zone UK.

This treatment softens the visible signs of ageing, as well as resurfaces, re-densifies and lifts. Combined with exclusive active lift massage, it stimulates cellular renewal, creates fullness and redefines the volume of the face.

This is obtained through a renewing double peel, followed by an innovative lifting and firming mask.

The sublime skin deluxe lift is particularly recommended for mature skin with visible signs of ageing (uneven skin tone, wrinkles and loss of tone and volume).

2. You’re worth it!

You’ve probably spent a lot of money on your dress, your photographer, your venue… so why skimp on your face? You’ll be looking at your wedding photographs for the rest of your life so make sure you look your very best.

3. Be stress-free on your big day

Your wedding day is sure to be busy and you may be feeling nervous or stressed out. You don’t want to spend time worrying if your foundation is perfect or if your eyeliner is straight… Hiring a make-up artist will allow you to sit back and relax and let someone else pamper you on your special day. Kelly will listen to your concerns, your goals and make you feel at ease. She will come to a location of your choice (travel within a 20 mile radius is included).

4. Colour selection

Make-up artists study the art of colours. From lipsticks and eyeshadows to choosing the right foundation; they know how what will work best for you and your colouring. You may want to try a bold lip for the big day but don't know which shade to choose, or you may want a barely-there, glowing skin look… Kelly has been perfecting the art of wedding make-up for over 10 years and has created stunning, original looks on over 800 brides.

5. Be camera-ready

You may do a great job on your everyday makeup, but make-up for photography is totally different. For example, light bouncing off of make-up changes the way it looks; foundations with SPF in reflect bright white making you look ghostly… A professional make-up artist knows this and how to avoid it. Kelly will have you looking gorgeous in person and in photographs.

6. Make-up that lasts

Make-up artists use high-quality products that will last all day and all night! You wont have to worry about your make-up wearing off. By using specialty products like primers, setting sprays and powders, Kelly will give you a long-lasting makeup look for your special day (lipstick/gloss may need to be touched up due to all that smiling and kissing!)

7. Professional products

Since make-up artists apply cosmetics for a living, most have a kit stocked with high-quality products, designed for wearability and flexibility that you may not own or never thought to try! Not to mention products are professionally applied. Using a broad range of the best cosmetic brands, including MAC, Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown and Tom Ford, Kelly has achieved stunning, original looks on over 800 brides.

8. Knowledge is power

Professional make-up artists know all the tricks to help highlight your best features while disguising any imperfections. Kelly knows how to do your brows to best frame your eyes. If you want to pull off a bold lip colour, they’ll pick the right shade for you. If you want your eyes to stand out, she’ll make it happen.

9. Your bridal party

As well as pampering you, a professional make-up artist can create a unique, yet uniform look for your entire bridal party. Kelly will take into consideration each bridesmaid's colouring and personal style. She can do a full wedding party up to about eight people's make-up on the wedding morning.

10. The experience!

It’s one of the biggest days of your life - sit back and enjoy the experience. Having your make-up done professionally is one of life’s best treats. You’ll feel relaxed, pampered and super confident - and best of all, you’ll look stunning!
